Library Mission & History

The mission of the Springfield Township Library is to meet the reading, learning and information needs of all Springfield Township residents with a skilled and knowledgeable staff in a welcoming environment. We especially recognize our responsibility to serve as a place for children to discover the joy of reading.

The Springfield Township Library was established in April of 1976 at the Township Annual Meeting. A Library Board was appointed and it was decided that the old Andersonville schoolhouse would be used as a library building. In 1977, the schoolhouse was moved to the Library's original site at 10900 Andersonville Road and renovated. The library remained at this location for 23 years before the current location was constructed.

A bond issue for the construction of the Springfield Township Civic Center, which included the Library, was approved by the community in the November 1998 election. Construction of the Center commenced in October of 2000. The new building opened to the public in March of 2002, with architectural features that engage the beautiful surroundings of the Shiawassee Basin Preserve. Visitors can observe nature from all angles of the library through the floor to ceiling picture windows.

Currently, the Springfield Township Library is a class IV library serving a community of almost 14,000 citizens. The library offers a collection of over 70,000 items in addition to public Internet computers, Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, interlibrary loan, adult, teen, and children’s programming and other services.

Co-op

The Springfield Township Library is a member of The Library Network (TLN) shared system and the Michigan Electronic Library (MeL). TLN brings the shared borrowing privileges of about 55 other libraries to Springfield patrons along with delivery service.
